7.01.2019 - 13.01.2019

Arvadans for Progressive Action (APA): Call to Action for January 7th - 13th

——————————————————————

***ARVADA CALL TO ACTION: Talk to your neighbors, friends, and family about the One Street, One Truck, One Arvada initiative. This would organize our trash hauling system so that only one trash truck would drive down each street each week. Remember these main points:

  • Costs will go down. HOAs and the city of Golden pay less for trash AND recycling than we do for trash alone. It is more cost effective for the company to pick up the same amount of trash in a smaller space, and is therefore more cost effective for us. Also, companies will have to compete for the contract with the city, which will also drive costs down.
  • We will see less wear and tear on our streets. These massively heavy trucks cause a lot of damage, and reducing from 11 to 1 possible companies will save taxpayer money.
  • It will help us recycle more. Currently, Arvada only recycles 13% of its waste. The biggest barrier to that is people have to pay extra to do the right thing and recycle. With One Street, One Truck, recycling would be included, along with bulky item and yard debris pickup.
  • It will increase our air quality. Less trucks = less pollution.
  • It will be less noisy. People will hear trash trucks driving down their street only once a week instead of every day.
  • It will make our streets safer. Less trucks = less potential for accidents.

SHOW UP - MONDAY: Arvada City Council Business Meeting. 6:00pm. Arvada City Hall 8101 Ralston Road. Business meetings are open for public comments. Thank them for moving forward on affordable housing and organized trash, and urge them to move quickly on both areas. https://arvada.org/city-hall/city-council/city-council-meetings-and-agendas

SHOW UP - TUESDAY: City Council Community Visioning. 5:00 - 7:00pm. Arvada City Hall 8101 Ralston Road. This is your chance to come chat with Council members and City staff to share your visions for Arvada's future. https://arvada.org/about/news-events/arvada-residents-are-encouraged-to-attend-community-visioning-open-house

*** NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION*** Many thanks to IFRR for this CTA!

END THE SHUTDOWN: Call Michael Bennet (202-224-5852) and Cory Gardner’s offices today (202-224-5941) and tell them you want them both to "vote against the motion to proceed on S.1 until government is reopened." Senate shouldn't proceed on ANY new business until the bipartisan bills passed by the House to reopen the government are voted on by the Senate. We need 41 votes to do this.

*BLACK LIVES MATTER* A day ago, Nancy Pelosi participated in a public forum and was asked by a black woman if she supported Black Lives Matter. Pelosi’s answer was… lacking. Actually, it was terrible. It’s 2019, and Pelosi answered by saying that while she supports the BLM sentiment, “all lives matter” and proceeded to run down a list of “all communities” that need to be supported. (https://twitter.com/msnbc/status/1081400163992780800).

So here’s the ask: call Pelosi’s office and let her know that she needs to widen her understanding of the BLM movement and understand why it’s so important to *specifically* address the issues facing the black community in particular. And not just to “redress past grievances”. Economic inequality, ongoing systemic oppression, and marginalization in nearly every aspect of modern life continues to lead to massive gaps in opportunity, safety, and prosperity for black people. Pelosi could have and should have taken the opportunity to speak smartly on this issue. Let her know: (202) 225-4965. If you encounter a full mailbox, please also tweet her and tag her in. Here’s an example: https://twitter.com/indivisiblefrr/status/1082032733449203712. And here’s a brief reality check on why it matters: https://www.theroot.com/nancy-pelosi-banged-her-all-lives-matter-drum-despite-1831529739

No one wants to have the government shut down on a Friday night, right before the holidays. So tell your family, your neighbors, your fellow Indivisible group members, E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E in CO (and CO!) to call every day from now until December 21 to make sure Trump doesn’t get one more dollar for his racist agenda. SHOW UP - MONDAY: No Wall Between Us: Vigil for Human Rights on #IntlMigrantsDay. 6:00pm - 7:30pm. 5209 Montview Blvd, Denver. This vigil is part of Love Knows No Borders, a week of action standing in solidarity with the migrant caravan and all who seek refuge in the U.S. Araceli Velasquez, a leader in sanctuary fighting for her life and her family, invites the community to stand with her as an asylum seeker and call on the US to offer peace and safety to those seeking refuge. Clergy from Temple Micah and Park Hill United Methodist Church will lead the vigil alongside Araceli. Together, we are calling on the U.S. to end the detention and deportation of immigrants, respect the human right to migrate, and end the militarization of the border. https://www.facebook.com/events/357634011635733/
